We had a wonderful two week vacation in New Zealand that taught us one important lesson -- that two weeks was not enough to see all of New Zealand. Of course, most people already knew this, especially the Europeans who were taking a month (at minimum) to see the country, but we didn't. Sadly, this meant we had to pass on some classic sights (Queenstown, Milford Sound, Otago Peninsula, Mt. Aspiring National Park, Abel Tasman National Park?.alas, the list itself is a two-week vacation!) that we had high on our list of things to see. But, on the bright side, the parts of the country we did see were fantastic and now we have an excuse to get back.
The scope of our vacation, which shrank gradually over time and at each of the many construction projects we encountered, went from Auckland through Tongariro to Wellington on the North Island and from Picton through Nelson Lakes down to Fox Glacier on the West Coast, then from the Banks Peninsula and Christchurch through Kaikoura and Blenheim back to Picton on South Island's east coast. The highlights were walking Tongariro Crossing, helicoptering the glaciers, kayaking with the dolphins and hiking with the seals. What a great trip!

In Japan they don't celebrate Easter but springtime in Japan is when everything goes Cherry Blossom (Sakura) crazy. The cherry blossom is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and takes a very prominent position in Japanese culture. Around late March the whole nation excitedly waits for the first buds to appear on cherry trees. The 'sakura-zensen, the 'cherry-blossom-front' works slowly northwards from the south islands until it finally reaches the northern tip of Hokkaido in May and the whole process is broadcast on television rather like a weather report showing different areas of the country as various shades of pink depending on the status of their cherry blossoms. Accompanying the front are hanami, the 'flower-viewing' parties celebrating these short-lived blooms. Everywhere in Tokyo is pink at the moment; even the Kit Kats have gone pink!

(Rome, Italy) - Construction has begun in the “eternal” city for a new Latter-day Saint temple. Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along with Church and local community leaders, participated in the traditional groundbreaking ceremony for the Rome Italy Temple October 23, 2010.

President Monson underlined the uniqueness and the historical moment whose importance goes beyond the borders of Rome and Italy. He thanked the members of the Church for their commitment to follow the example of Jesus Christ.

“My heart is filled with gratitude,” said President Monson as he addressed the 500 guests in attendance. “Members throughout Italy, and the entire Mediterranean area, will be able to come here.”

In attendance at the morning ceremony was Mr. Giuseppe Ciardi, representing the Mayor of Rome, Giovanni Alemanno, and other local government representatives.

"A ceremony that profoundly touched me for the sincere and heartfelt appreciation of those attending," said Senator Lucio Malan. "A positive day for Italy because those who profess to obey the laws of the state and the laws of God make the country in which they live a better place. "

Other Church leaders in attendance included Elder William R. Walker, Executive Director of the Temple Department, Elder Erich W. Kopischke, president of the European area and his counselors, Elder Gérald Caussé and Elder José A. Teixeira of the First Quorum of the Seventy.

President Monson surprised members of the Church when he announced that a temple would be built in Rome, Italy during the October 2008 general conference.

The Church will build the temple on a beautiful 15-acre site in the community of Settebagni, Rome. When completed, it will serve over 23,000 Church members living in Italy and those in neighboring countries.

Currently the Church operates 134 temples worldwide. The Rome Italy Temple will be the twelfth in Europe and the first in Italy.

Rome (Italy), capital city of Italy and of Lazio (Latium) Region and Rome Province, on the Tiber River, in the central part of the country near the Tyrrhenian Sea. Vatican City, most of which is located in an enclave within Rome, is the seat of the papacy of the Roman Catholic church and has been recognized as an independent state by the Italian government since 1929. The majestic dome of Saint Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City dominates the Roman skyline. For centuries, Rome has been called the Eternal City, a title earned through its importance as one of the great cities of Western civilization, as the capital of the Roman Empire, and as the world center of the Roman Catholic church. Since 1871 it has been the capital of united Italy.
According to tradition, Rome was founded in 753 bc on one of the Seven Hills—a term used for centuries to describe the Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, Aventine, and Palatine hills surrounding the old community. Archaeological evidence indicates, however, that human settlement here dates from at least 1000 bc. The Capitoline Hill (Monte Capitoline) was long the seat of Rome’s government, and the Palatine Hill was the site of such great structures as the Palace of the Flavians, built by the Roman emperor Domitian. As a result of construction through the centuries, most of the Seven Hills are now hardly distinguishable from the adjacent plain. Other hills of Rome include the Pincian (Pincio) and the Janiculum.
